Hygiene

Raw pet food can carry bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. These can be passed from pets to people, so good hygiene is essential. Follow the same practices you would when preparing raw meat for yourself.

Keep it separate

  • Store and defrost raw pet food away from human food and food preparation areas.
  • Use separate utensils and containers for your dog's food, not ones used for human food.

After handling

  • Wash your hands with soap and hot water straight after handling or preparing raw pet food.
  • Clean and disinfect all surfaces the raw food has touched, including work surfaces, containers, utensils and feeding bowls.
  • After your dog has eaten, clean any surfaces where food may have fallen.

Leftovers

  • Dispose of uneaten food promptly.

People at higher risk

  • Children, especially those under 5, should not touch or eat raw pet food. If they do, wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Older people and anyone with a weakened immune system should wash their hands with soap and water before and after handling raw pet food, and after handling their pet.

For dog feeding only. Not for human consumption.
