Storage & Defrosting

Raw pet food can carry bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, so it needs to be stored and defrosted carefully and kept away from human food.

Storing in the freezer

  • Keep raw pet food frozen at -18°C or below until you are ready to defrost it.
  • Keep it away from human food, on the lowest shelf, so nothing can drip onto other food.

How to defrost

  • Defrost thoroughly in a sealed container in the refrigerator (0–4°C).
  • Keep it away from human food, food preparation surfaces and equipment while it defrosts.
  • Label the container clearly so it isn't mistaken for human food.

Once it's defrosted

  • Keep it refrigerated in a sealed container and use it within 24 hours.
  • Do not refreeze after defrosting.
